Friday: The Eastern Sea @ The Basement

I’ve never met the Austin, Texas band The Eastern Sea but if sounds tell the story, I bet they are really nice guys. I know another band of really nice guys – Death Cab for Cutie – who I saw perform at Bernie’s “back in the day” (an old guy like me can say that and truly mean it) and I remember them sincerely thanking the audience for paying attention after each and every song. It comes as no surprise, then, that The Eastern Sea sort of occupies that same sonic space as Death Cab – nice and dreamy guitars, pretty harmonies, very non-threatening vocals.

Wednesday: Pomegranates @ Kobo

You know how there are local bands that sound local and then there are local bands that make you say, “No way can these guys be from here!” Pomegranates are one of those bands. Actually, they AREN’T from here (Columbus), they are based in Cincinnati, but they have that Austin/Silverlake/Brooklyn chic.

The band’s fourth album – the first for the Austin-based Modern Outsider (also home to Ume, Bad Veins, etc) – is called Heaven and if you think rock journalists haven’t described it as such, well, you’d be mistaken. Dual vocalists allow the band to avoid conventional trappings; there’s a variety of sounds and influences spread throughout, much of it straddling the line between underground rock and loft party dance pop.

Download: “Pass Away”

Pomegranates, She Bears and Cliffs will share the Kobo stage Wednesday night. Doors open at 8.

Watch: Mount Carmel on Red Bull Soundstage

So Red Bull recently launched Soundstage, a bilateral video blog meant to assist emerging artists to a new level of notoriety based on public interaction and strategic industry recognition. Yesterday, Mount Carmel posted their session on their Facebook page… a 12+ minute video that juxtaposes their assiduous dedication to their occupation (self-started dumpster company) and their craft (blues rock) with their uncomplicated mentality on being a band.

“We had no expectations and we felt in our hearts what we were doing was important to us, at least… There are points in your life where having that helps you move along. ” – bassist Pat Reed

“You shouldn’t join a band to be successful, to be famous. You should join a band because you like playing music.” – drummer Kevin Skubak

“No matter what, I’m doing this ’til I’m 60.” – singer/guitarist Matt Reed

Watch the whole piece above, complete with yet another quality Lost Weekend cameo.

Mount Carmel’s autumn dates supporting NOLA-based Down and Warbeast to be announced soon.
