Dayton, OH Celebrates the Life of Jeremy Frederick

Jeremy (right) with close friend Timmy Taylor of Brainiac

Dayton, OH celebrates the life of Jeremy Frederick from 6-10 PM tonight at Blind Bob’s with performances by Motel Beds and Astro Fang to follow. Jeremy was a pillar of Ohio’s independent music community and played in Lazy, Let’s Crash, Human Reunion, Cigarhead, and more. So it goes, Jeremy Frederick passed away in his sleep on August 16.

Known as a charismatic, hilarious, and wildly unique fellow, Jeremy had such a gregarious personality that many in the Dayton community were touched by his life. Here is a video of him playing an on-the-spot-created song with Swearing at Motorists at Omega Music in 2010. S@M frontman Dave Doughman broke a guitar string, Jeremy jumped onstage to tell a story, and then this happened.

Jeremy Frederick will surely be missed and his life will certainly be celebrated. He really was a truly idiosyncratic personality. One-of-a-kind. Rest in peace.

Listen: Mr. Muthafuckin’ eXquire – “Lost in Transition” (Produced by Mike Jaxx)

(egotripland)

No, muthafuckin’ Bill Murray did not sing karaoke in Columbus  last night as promised. No, this Mr. Muthafuckin’ eXquire joint made for Ruby Hornet.Com‘ Closed Sessions  Lost In Transition does not mention Bill Murray despite having a title that resembles the movie  Murray sings karaoke in but it is a good song and you could listen to it if you think that is something you would like to do.

Friday: The Eastern Sea @ The Basement

I’ve never met the Austin, Texas band The Eastern Sea but if sounds tell the story, I bet they are really nice guys. I know another band of really nice guys – Death Cab for Cutie – who I saw perform at Bernie’s “back in the day” (an old guy like me can say that and truly mean it) and I remember them sincerely thanking the audience for paying attention after each and every song. It comes as no surprise, then, that The Eastern Sea sort of occupies that same sonic space as Death Cab – nice and dreamy guitars, pretty harmonies, very non-threatening vocals.

Fargo, North Dakota-based Secret Cities will play their first show in Columbus tonight at Ace of Cups. This band made my “Favorites of 2011” list with last year’s Strange Hearts (Western Vinyl) and I’ve very much looked forward to seeing them ever since. Earlier this year, they made The Boston Phoenix’s “50 Bands 50 States” list of best new bands in America (placed right next to Columbus’s own Saintseneca).

Also on the bill are Strange Tribe and locals Room & Board. Doors are at 9.

Listen: Mark Eitzel – “I Love You but You’re Dead”

Mark Eitzel and Columbus go way back. At one time Eitzel wrote for Tim Anstaett’s The Offence, and his early, Joy Division-esque band Naked Skinnies began here. They were the “hero band” of Ron House, who played lots of shows with Naked Skinnies and helped put out the band’s first 7-inch, “All My Life,” on “Naked House Records” in 1981. Eitzel formed the Skinnies, his precursor to American Music Club, with Greg Bonnell (AMC, Moviola), John Hricko and Nancy Kangas before heading out to San Francisco. Though Eitzel doesn’t recall the period with particular fondness and has yet to permit digital dissemination of the aforementioned 7-inch, it’s better than he remembers it to be and a fascinating look into how Eitzel started out.

Fast-forward to 2012. American Music Club is dissolved (at least for the time being), and Eitzel is about to release a solo album called Don’t Be a Stranger. Eitzel has said of the new record, “I wanted to make an album more reminiscent of records like Harvest by Neil Young or Five Leaves Left by Nick Drake than anything I’ve previously done.” The Young/Drake touchstones make perfect sense on this first preview, which recounts the tale of Eitzel watching a band fronted by a woman who wrote “I love you but you’re dead” on his poster.

Don’t Be a Stranger is out Oct. 2 on Merge Records.

Wednesday: Pomegranates @ Kobo

You know how there are local bands that sound local and then there are local bands that make you say, “No way can these guys be from here!” Pomegranates are one of those bands. Actually, they AREN’T from here (Columbus), they are based in Cincinnati, but they have that Austin/Silverlake/Brooklyn chic.

The band’s fourth album – the first for the Austin-based Modern Outsider (also home to Ume, Bad Veins, etc) – is called Heaven and if you think rock journalists haven’t described it as such, well, you’d be mistaken. Dual vocalists allow the band to avoid conventional trappings; there’s a variety of sounds and influences spread throughout, much of it straddling the line between underground rock and loft party dance pop.

Download: “Pass Away”

Pomegranates, She Bears and Cliffs will share the Kobo stage Wednesday night. Doors open at 8.
