Wavves and Fucked Up will play in Columbus at Skullys September 28th.

Pistol Annies released “Hell on Heels” today

Duffy may fire me for posting about country music on Donewaiting but I find something appealing about 3-part female harmonies sung with southern accents. With the Dixie Chicks on hiatus (yes, I own all of their CDs), I’ve been looking for a trio to fill in and thankfully stumbled upon Pistol Annies last night.

Even if you don’t follow country music (and I don’t), the name Miranda Lambert might ring a bell – she’s an up-and-coming star (and Grammy winner) in the country music world and somebody that I would love to go out drinking with (Miranda – next time you’re in Columbus, let’s meet at the Surly Girl Saloon!). Lambert’s partnered up with like-minded singer/songwriters Ashley Monroe and Angaleena Presley in Pistol Annies and the trio’s debut, Hell on Heels, was released today. Maybe a contender for my “Best of 2011” list.

Don’t worry, I’m sure Wes has some sort of rap/hip-hip post coming up soon that’ll knock this off the top of the page!

RIP Jani Lane (Warrant)

TMZ is reporting that ex-Warrant singer Jani Lane was found dead in a hotel room in L.A. this evening. Unfortunately, Lane’s been battling drugs and alcohol for so many years that this doesn’t come as a surprise but it’s still a shock.

Warrant was one of the first bands I ever wrote about and I had the opportunity to meet Jani many times over the years. He was always a cool guy to his fans and I’m just at a loss for words right now.

Ten songs I want to hear at Lollapalooza this weekend

Feels a little weird to be calling this the 20th anniversary of Lollapalooza even though the festival did make it’s debut in 1991. There was a period of inactivity and the reformatting of the concept, going from a traveling alternative rock circus to an annual 3-day festival in Chicago that features many mainstream acts.

That being said, there’s plenty to see this coming weekend at Grant Park. Last week I spotlighted two lesser known acts performing this year – Midnight Conspiracy and Kyle Lucas & Captain Midnite over on Lollapalooza.com.

Here are ten songs I want to hear at Lollapalooza this weekend.

My Morning Jacket – “Victory Dance” (performing Saturday, 8pm, Bud Light stage)

RIP Jane Scott (Cleveland Plain Dealer music critic)

There might not be a Chip Midnight had there not been a Jane Scott. Throughout my junior high and high school days, I’d always tear through the Cleveland Plain Dealer to see if the legendary rock critic had written about a band that I was about to go see or had just seen – and most times she had, whether it be the latest hair metal band from L.A. that was swinging through town to play at the Empire Concert Club or a bonafide rock all-star like U2 that had just put out a new album. Jane always had something nice to say and was usually on target which was something hard for a teenage me to believe due to the fact that Jane Scott was 52 years older than me! No way should she be in touch with a teenage reading audience, and yet she was.

After I started my writing career, I crossed paths with Jane a few times in Cleveland. The most memorable encounter was when we both were at the Cleveland Agora in 1993 to interview a new, up-and-coming rap-rock band from Omaha called 311. I had first dibs and interviewed the guys on their tour camper while they indulged in some smokey-smokey. As she hung outside the camper waiting for us, I gave them a brief history. “She interviewed the Beatles the first time they played in Cleveland. She’s a legend!”

Jane Scott with 311

After both of us had finished our interviews, the guys invited us to stand on the side of the stage to watch them and we both took them up on their offer. Halfway through the set I looked over to see Jane sitting on some equipment cabinet, her chin nestled into her chest, her eyes closed. She was fast asleep, just feet away from 311!

Jane Scott passed away today at the age of 92. Thanks for the memories!

Little Dragon Scheduled to Play Roots Picnic + Album Release Date & Tracklisting

Little Dragon will do a short run of shows in the US at the end of May leading up to their performance at The Roots 4th Annual Picnic on June 4th, 2011 in Philadelphia.

Who is Little Dragon some may ask?

Well, Trip-Hop doesn’t exist. It is something you say to sleep with…Ah forget it. Even if Trip Hop existed, and I am not sure if Trip_hop is how you label Little Dragon. However, I feel like they would appeal to most people that like female singers, and moody music. I mean, they’ve toured with Gorillaz and De La Soul.

Little Dragon put their new single “Nightlight” on Pitchfork last week. You can watch Little Dragon’s performance of “Ritual Union” on the Fader’s Website..

And how endearing is this PS22 video of Little Dragon working with Staten Island youths on Gorilla Vs. Bear. Also rappity rap fans, you will also note that Little Dragon is working with Big Boi on his next record.

Little Dragon’s new album RITUAL UNION will be out July 12th on Peace Frog Recors/EMI.

Tracklisting after the jump.

Metallica Warns Fans To Beware Of the Front Row’s Claims of Footage Ownership

Cliff Em All was my shit when I was in 7th Grade. So in the spirit of that video I am passing along this message Metallica’s Management has sent out to their fans regarding false claims of Metallica footage acquisition.

Los Angeles, CA – March 23, 2011 – Metallica today announced that all announcements made on their behalf via Writers Group Film Corp. and their subsidiary Front Row Networks, Inc. are false. Writers Group issued a press release on March 22, 2011 announcing “the acquisition of several hours of unique Metallica 3D & 2D concert video footage for distribution.”

“Metallica owns and controls its recorded performances and Creeping Death Music owns the vast majority of any music embodied in Metallica Recordings,” said the band’s attorney Peter Paterno. “Pretty much any legitimate business would have contacted us to see how Metallica felt about it. Maybe these guys just forgot.”

“We are very happy to have bolstered the Writers Group Film Corp. stock price by using the Metallica name,” quipped Marc Reiter from Metallica’s management, Q Prime. “We only wish they would have told us sooner so we could have bought some.”
