MP3:Copywrite Ft/Middle Distance Runner-Forever and A Day(Produced By RJD2)

Tuttle Park, Columbus Ohio

MP3:Copywrite-Forever and a Day

“On Forever and a Day” RJD2 and Copywrite work together to mourn their fellow Megahert, Camu Tao. They brought in an indie rock group, Middle Distance Runner, to add layers and sing the hook. This is the first song on Copywrite’s upcoming album the Life and Time of Pete Nelson due out in October.

Def Jux and Fat Possum are putting out Camu’s album King of Hearts August 16th

(I swear to Allah that I’m not trying to get on this computer and talk about death everyday. Not to get all Jim Carrol, but, 3 major figures in hip hop from Columbus did die. And both of Copy’s parents are deceased so…artists are gonna make art about what affects them )

R.I.P. Rammellzee

null

Rammellzee passed away yesterday. Rammellzee is probably best known for Beat Bop, the above record that Basquit did the cover for. He was also in Stranger than Paradise. Rammellzee bboyd, wrote graffiti and rapped. You might remember him as the dood freestyling with a shotgun at the end of Wild Style
He became an scuplter, painter and performance artist. Or maybe he always was.
Bboy, graffiti and rapping could all fall into those categories.
He was big on the idea that letters were symbols in a intergalatic war of language,
Regardless Rammelzee was one of the orginal weirdo’s in Hip Hop so put him in a cannon that includes Sun-Ra, MF Doom and the Rza. He was assicioated with Afro-Futurism, but he called himself a Gothic Futurist..

I high suggest you listen to this podcast Uncommon Radio did with a very throurough interview with Rammelzee. He talks about the history of hip hop, method acting/skitzophrenia, being selftaugfht, creating mythology and tons of other uber-interesting things.
Think Sugarhill Gang Meets Philip K Dick.

L.e. for the Uncool brings it on this video and reps Columbus properly. Footie of Ender, Rilla and others from the WTC. The video has effects that remind me of Pharcyde’s “Drop” with L.E. riding his BMX backwards at times. The song itself is a banger. L.E. raps with urgency over a bassline that will get stuck in your brain immediatley. Shots to Milk N Syrup’s Ralph Rude on the cameo.

Ropas-Columbus Graffiti

Last Week, I spent a decent about of time corresponding with people involved with BET’s “The Deal. It’s a Hip Hop program that airs on the cable network @ 3am every weeknight. The Deals agenda is to blow-up the newnew in Hip Hop and also to show love to parts of the culture that people sleep on.

We agreed that a relationship between “The Deal” and Donewaiting has potential to make some unique things happen.

When I was reading this week’s schedule two episodes stuck out to me….Tuesday’s episode that had Styles P bigging up his favorite female emcee, and Friday’s show that has Mixtape Drama King DJ Kay Slay aka DEZ discussing the importance of graffiti history.

This got me thinking about my good friend Ropas and her impact on Columbus and NYC graffiti.

Ropas is orginally from Columbus, and a Fort Hayes graduate.

Ropas was a powerhouse starting back in 94-95 in our city. She was prolific with unique pieces, toss-ups and handstyles.
She eventually moved to New York to go to Pratt, in 97 I think and blew the fuck up.
But she would return to Columbus during the Summer.

She often played the devil’s advocate and was no stranger to beef when returning home to the C-0.

Her + Set-up vs. Metro, Cas and Jek?

Even when she was fueding with my people we would have to give it up to her. Ro was up in high profile spots in Manhattan and BK
Her NYC bombing partners were never were slouches. Ropas painted with people like Set-up, Elik and Set.

(More about Ropas and tons of flicks after the jump)

RJD2 Interview About Columbus Graffiti, Howard Zinn, The Colossus & Mad Men

All Photos by Dan McMahon except the Holy Roller.

As we have said repeatedly on this website. RJD2 is headlining our 7-Year Anniversary at Skullys this Friday Feb 5th. Ticket info and line-up here

RJ is an old friend of mine, so in this informal interview we chopped it up about his brief graffiti career, walking the tracks near the Ohio State Fairgrounds, the passing of Howard Zinn, RJ’s new album The Colossus and his theme song for TV’s Mad Men.

I remember when I first heard your name in Hip Hop discussions around town, graff writers were like…thats RJD2 blah blah he is down with A-Team? A-Team had pieces at the convention center and CAP that hit you up… This question is more for the graffiti dorks but…?

so i moved to the bay area after dropping out of college. i had my records and turntables and stuff, and one of the dudes who i stayed with shortly was down with the a-team guys, this dude cliff. he was the only guy i knew in the city at a point, and then he left too. so the only people i knew in SF were cram, esa, this kid beaver who i cant remember what he wrote, but he would do these “god is love” pieces all over the city, and a few other guys. so they sorta inducted me in as the unofficial a-team dj or whatever. those were the only kids i knew in the city, really. so i’d hang with them, maybe go out a little here and there with em while they painted, but not too much. i later found out that esa had a columbus connection. and then cram moved to philly after i’d been here a while. small world, basically. and my friend cliff lived near and was friends with mike giant, and looked up to him-in 95 SF graff world, he was a really big deal, up there with twist and amaze and the like upper echelon of bay writers, so i met mike thru him. esa later moved to LA, and i think she was doing fine art or something. cram actually was doing public murals for a living for a long time. i guess mike giant got involved in tattoos, but i havent spoken to him in a loooooong time. but in short, all the a-team guys were just cool people, no ego shit, just real friendly folks.

RILLA Schematics

MP3:Greenhouse-Gettin There

A lot times I get emailed MP3’s and they aren’t near anything but my blackberry so I don’t get to put them up until they are a few days old. So I’ve decided from now on, when I post images of drawings, I will add a song.

Daymon Day 9-19-09

day2Daymon Day will be returning to Tuttle Park, Saturday 9-19-09. There will be basketball, mural painting, dejay’s and a cookout from 3-8pm culiminating with the highlight of any god-fearing/foreign car stearing humyn’s week, the Daymon Day Parade. The parade leaves at 8 and journeys down the scenic campus of the Ohio State University until it reaches community hub, the Milk Bar, which is located on 5th and. High. There will be an after-party at a currently undisclosed location featuring DJ Lo Zone, True Skills, DJ Detox, and DJ Pos 2. All are welcome. We regret that this is the same day as Independents’ Day downtown, but this the day that we confirmed with Daymon’s family months ago. We are sure everything is going to be ok. All welcome.
