I Know Some of Y’all Hate Fun..

Blueprint masked up for Halloween @ So What Wednesdays.

But I am like fuck it. I came across a Flickr account post by Bridget Eshbaugh that had lots of shots of people enjoying themselves at various recent events in Columbus

Brainbow as Helm’s Deep on Halloween, in Pictures

DW message board user starchild has posted an excellent flickr set of Brainbow performing as Helm’s Deep, a LOTR-themed supergroup performing music from the films, at Ruby Tuesday’s last Saturday. The costumes and set look ridiculously good. If you are kicking youself, like I am, for missing the show, these photos are the next best thing, though there’s talk of a video to be posted in the future. Great shots!

Gucci Mane Show Review

All photos by Johnny Cashola on a crappy disposable camera.

Me and a few friends went and watched Gucci Mane perform at Club Ice last Friday. Gucci is a man that has sold 500,000 records independently with a label that he has left and is fueding with, a man that sent a friend of Young Jeezy’s to his grave, and has the streets on smash right now with his hit “Freaky Girl”. The night was a spectacle of great porportions complete with a member of the SwatTeam rocking a bullet proof vest and carrying a Machine Gun looking in a manner that resembled a StormTrooper walking up and down Long street, a news crew from godknows where, a two-hour line wait which resulted in the door prices being jacked up to 300 dollars on a 20 dollar ticket. Then there was the actual show.

Last Night in Columbus: Nada Surf, Sea Wolf Kick off Tour

Nada Surf kicked off their fall tour last night in Columbus with Sea Wolf. Both bands sounded great and the place was packed (much to the chagrin of a lot of people there).

Nada Surf’s set list leaned heavily towards “Let Go,” which was fine by me — it’s one of my all time favorite albums. While “The Weight is a Gift” didn’t immediately grab me when it came out, it’s been a bit of a slow burner, slowly becoming an essential part of my music collection.

I was a little worried that the Sea Wolf crowd would leave after their set, but thankfully I was wrong. Both bands earned new fans last night, and I give an A+ to the booking agents who put this tour together. If Wilco wasn’t playing in town tonight, I probably would make my way down to Cincinnati to catch their next show together.

Here’s a bunch of photos of both bands by Kim Rottmayer

YOUUUUU! YOUUUUU!

Superman that…

Get Right is a monthly Dance Party thrown by Johnny Cashola, and DC Kareem at the Cove Lounge. Its an interesting place for it because the Cove is like a nicer, black version of Bourbon Street or Carabar. By that I mean its a smaller spot that appeals to to people that actually have taste, and is respected. That respect pays off. Much like rockbars having Brian Johnstown Massacre, Sonic Youth or the Silver Apples, the Cove has had Questlove, Green Lantern, and Biz Markie this past year. Cove promoters throw a First Friday elsewhere, so they turn it over to my idiot friends once a month. For good reason……the bar stays packed. And the same records that work on the Cove’s clientele make “Get Rights” crowd excited.

Pictures after the break..

I was a little disappointed with my photos this time around. These don’t compare to the ones i took a few years ago of Modest Mouse. It’s amazing when given a “prime” spot what a difference it can make. I will kiss you the next time you are up, barricade!

Photos: Bright Eyes and Gillian Welch in Columbus

This was my third time seeing Bright Eyes, and ultimately the tie-breaking vote. The first time I saw him live, the show was really bad. This was several years ago, and since then I’ve learned that the problem was more or less 50% the management of the club and 50% how Conor reacted to it.

The second time I saw Bright Eyes was during the Vote for Change tour in Cleveland with R.E.M. and Springsteen. This show, they were great. So last night was my make-or-break situation as to whether I’d ever want to see the band live again.

I’m happy to report that I loved the show. This time out, Bright Eyes was a 10+ person band, completely with string section and two drumkits. While the set list leaned heavily towards the new work, I didn’t mind at all. Throw in an amazing set by Gillian Welch (who also performed a bunch of songs with Bright Eyes), and you have yourself one great show.

Here’s a bunch of photos, taken by our staff photographer Kim Rottmayer.
