MP3:Path-The Waking Life (Feat Jacob Wright)

MP3:Path(featuring Jacob Wright)-the Waking Life
MP3:Path-Floating Away Freestyle

The lil homie Path celebrates his 21st Bday today by dropping a song off his album, the Next Big Thing. While that album title maybe showing a bit of rap modesty, I will say that Path has been really supportive of Columbus Hip Hop. Whether its opening up his studio to Fabrashay A for the Art Show or working with local legends like Met of Sa Smash, Meta4ce or Copywrite, in general Path is one of the few people in the current Campus music community that actually is an active student of his city.
These two songs will probably appeal more the Rhymesayer fans in our city than the cats that that grew up on Dipset but saul goode.
The Waking Life features his friend Jacob Wright from a band called I Am Mute.

Eric Moore is my close friend Alex Moore’s dad.

I was unable to go to the November 5th show but another one of our friends, B , caught some candid pictures of the The Godz at the LC and also hanging out out at the Carabar after the show.

Tuttle Park, Columbus Ohio

MP3:Copywrite-Forever and a Day

“On Forever and a Day” RJD2 and Copywrite work together to mourn their fellow Megahert, Camu Tao. They brought in an indie rock group, Middle Distance Runner, to add layers and sing the hook. This is the first song on Copywrite’s upcoming album the Life and Time of Pete Nelson due out in October.

Def Jux and Fat Possum are putting out Camu’s album King of Hearts August 16th

(I swear to Allah that I’m not trying to get on this computer and talk about death everyday. Not to get all Jim Carrol, but, 3 major figures in hip hop from Columbus did die. And both of Copy’s parents are deceased so…artists are gonna make art about what affects them )

Video:L.e.-“Bulldog BMX”

L.e. for the Uncool brings it on this video and reps Columbus properly. Footie of Ender, Rilla and others from the WTC. The video has effects that remind me of Pharcyde’s “Drop” with L.E. riding his BMX backwards at times. The song itself is a banger. L.E. raps with urgency over a bassline that will get stuck in your brain immediatley. Shots to Milk N Syrup’s Ralph Rude on the cameo.

Ropas-Columbus Graffiti

Last Week, I spent a decent about of time corresponding with people involved with BET’s “The Deal. It’s a Hip Hop program that airs on the cable network @ 3am every weeknight. The Deals agenda is to blow-up the newnew in Hip Hop and also to show love to parts of the culture that people sleep on.

We agreed that a relationship between “The Deal” and Donewaiting has potential to make some unique things happen.

When I was reading this week’s schedule two episodes stuck out to me….Tuesday’s episode that had Styles P bigging up his favorite female emcee, and Friday’s show that has Mixtape Drama King DJ Kay Slay aka DEZ discussing the importance of graffiti history.

This got me thinking about my good friend Ropas and her impact on Columbus and NYC graffiti.

Ropas is orginally from Columbus, and a Fort Hayes graduate.

Ropas was a powerhouse starting back in 94-95 in our city. She was prolific with unique pieces, toss-ups and handstyles.
She eventually moved to New York to go to Pratt, in 97 I think and blew the fuck up.
But she would return to Columbus during the Summer.

She often played the devil’s advocate and was no stranger to beef when returning home to the C-0.

Her + Set-up vs. Metro, Cas and Jek?

Even when she was fueding with my people we would have to give it up to her. Ro was up in high profile spots in Manhattan and BK
Her NYC bombing partners were never were slouches. Ropas painted with people like Set-up, Elik and Set.

(More about Ropas and tons of flicks after the jump)

ASK BSA/IOK=Graffiti isn’t Art Coverboy

Some dood named Russell Jones(no odb) wrote a book called Inside The Graffiti Culture:Why Graffiti isn’t Art.
Jones used Ohio graffiti writer Ask as his coverboy.

Here is the Amazon.com description:

Product Description
Illegal graffiti is disconnected from standard modes of visual production in fine art and design. The primary purpose of illegal graffiti for the graffiti writer is not the visual product, but “getting up.” Getting up involves writing or painting one’s name in as many places as possible for fame. The elements of risk, freedom and ritual unique to illegal graffiti serve to increase camaraderie among graffiti writers even as an individual’s fame in the graffiti subculture increases. When graffiti has moved from illegal locations to the legal arenas of fine art and advertising; risk, ritual and to some extent, camaraderie, has been lost in the translation. Illegal graffiti is often erroneously associated with criminal gangs. Legal modes of production using graffiti-style are problematic in the public eye as a result. I used primary and secondary interviews with graffiti writers in this book. My art historical approach differed from previous writers who have used mainly anthropological and popular culture methods to examine graffiti. This analysis enabled me to demonstrate that illegal graffiti is not art.
