RJD2 auctions beats to benefit Japan, awards Columbus native Grand Prize in Insane Warrior contest

RJD2 recently launched a contest that asked fans to submit their visual, audio or written representation of any track from We Are The Doorways, an album he made under the alias The Insane Warrior. Lots of people submitted, but the grand prize went to the video you see here, created by Joey Thomas and University of Cincinnati’s Walter Nini, a Columbus (Clintonville) native and son of Old 3C Records head Paul Nini. The song is “The Water Wheel,” and video will make you laugh.

RJ is also auctioning off five original beats on ebay, with all proceeds going to Doctors Without Borders. Details: Continue reading

NP from Thought Set twittered this little freestyle. Dude is dope.  You might remember him as the third guy on RJD2’s Ason’s Cycle. Anyway, this is just a warm-up that has the Columbus MC rappin’ over a looped up beat.

2010 Show Memories: Damn, I guess living in Columbus isn’t so bad.

When I sat down to recount my year, I hadn’t even really registered what I got to see. All my friends moved away. I pretty  was miserable.

I spent the majority of the year hanging out by myself.

But now looking back, I was really fortunate this year.

I got to see the Black Keys spread love and become one of the biggest rock bands in America. RJD2 played our 7 Year Anniversary. Jay Electronica came to town and did a really intimate show then got signed 7-8 months later by Jay-z to Roc Nation. I solicited Wavves’ opinion on Psychedelic Horseshit.  I witnessed  what Dame Dash’s guy, Currensy ,was doing the night Jay Electronica signed with Jay-z.  I talked to Bone after a nationally publicized arrest. Well, read away if you want.

The image source of this tattoo is  from  the cover of Chulahoma,  an ep by the Black Keys. It is on the body of a female that had a family member die of cancer.   The finger pointing it out belongs to Mary Stormer,  Key’s drummer Patrick Carney’s mother.  Mary Stormer’s son and Patrick’s brother,  Michael created the image that is tattooed on this girl.  The girl got this tattoo because Chulahoma was what got her through hard times.

The tribute to Junior Kimbrough IS a blues record.

Mary Stormer, and I explained to the girl that the band would really appreciate this.  Mrs. Stormer told me to take a picture and send it to Michael. The band was onstage so they couldn’t give the girl a hug. Continue reading

Columbus Hip Hop History:Groove Shack Documentary

Groove Shack was a record store here in the Short North from 1994-97. Pretty much everyone like MHZ(Copy, Camu, RJD2, Tage, Jakki), JRawls, the 3rd, Illogic put in time there.
Groove Shack is where Columbus scene that eventually got noticed internationally with the help of indie labels like Def Jux, Rhymesayers, Fondle Em, Groove Attack, Rawkus and Eastern Conference was built upon.
The owners made a documentary about the spot.
This documentary is being screened this week.
Thursday, November 18th at the Gateway Theater 1550 North High Street Columbus, OH 43201
The showing is from 730-930.
to be exact.

I saw the screening at Madlab, and the footage is priceless. Just watch the trailers..
The movie has a couple flaws, but it is not to be missed.

MP3:Copywrite-Forever and a Day

“On Forever and a Day” RJD2 and Copywrite work together to mourn their fellow Megahert, Camu Tao. They brought in an indie rock group, Middle Distance Runner, to add layers and sing the hook. This is the first song on Copywrite’s upcoming album the Life and Time of Pete Nelson due out in October.

Def Jux and Fat Possum are putting out Camu’s album King of Hearts August 16th

(I swear to Allah that I’m not trying to get on this computer and talk about death everyday. Not to get all Jim Carrol, but, 3 major figures in hip hop from Columbus did die. And both of Copy’s parents are deceased so…artists are gonna make art about what affects them )
